Have You Robodoodled Today?

robodoodle.open.ac.uk

The Knowledge Media Institute and the Faculty of Technology at the Open University have collaborated to produce a unique public drawing event.

RoboDoodle encouraged children of all ages to log on to a special university website to make a sketch on-line of their own design for a ‘really useful robot’. RoboDoodle was part of The Big Draw, the festival of drawing which took place throughout the UK in October, which is organised by The Campaign for Drawing.

Topic Robot Kits
Anonymous writes "BotStop.NET is a brand new robot community website providing users with the tools to upload their robots, get them reviewed by other robot creators and collaborate on their projects.

We have a large robot components section full of parts and bits to add to your creations. Search for a specific servo or microcontroller, or maybe choose the best battery for your robot by filtering to find exactly what you need. Also we provide many robot tutorials for you to get the most out of your robots and to give you a helping hand when making your own.

Last but not least we have a robot forum to enable robot lovers from all over the world to get in touch.

We have a competition starting within the week in which you can win a motor controller, microcontrollers (Arduino) and various other electronics and wheels. Be sure to sign up and upload your robot to take part.

Many thanks,
BotStop.NET"

ROBOSTUFF TASTER
Posted by ashley on Friday, January 22 @ 11:16:42 GMT (119 reads)
Topic STEM Outreach
Steve writes "More on the ROBOSTUFF TASTER for NESTA’s idiscover project on 18th January at Harris Academy, South Norwood, London.
This was a 2 hour session with 15 youngsters.
The session included a look at some interactive soft toys, showing their inner workings and how commercial toys achieved interactivity, including the Go Go Hampster and HexBug. The youngsters quickly appreciated that the "cover" for the toy was an extremely important selling point.
Then followed the making of a vibrobot from old electric toothbrushes. Rapid prototype and a proof of concept models being emphasised.
The youngsters then had a look at some commercial animation mechanisms and voice modules.
Finally they had to decide on a type of toy, the mechanisms/modules to use and any material to make their proof of concept toy "attractive", for the all day next session.
I am certainly looking forward to the event.

IET Symposium on Humanoid Robotics
Posted by ashley on Monday, January 18 @ 10:19:58 GMT (147 reads)
Topic Conferences & Workshops
London, 8th March 2010

A 1-day Symposium on Humanoid Robotics and an evening lecture by Prof Darwin Caldwell (Director, Italian Institute of Technology - IIT, Genoa) is being organised by the IET in London on 8th March 2010.

The 1-day Symposium will include speakers from a range of UK Universities (Aberystwyth, Bristol, Edinburgh, Hertfordshire, Imperial, Manchester, Plymouth & Sheffield) as well as 4 talks from leading researchers at IIT and more details can be found on the IET website list below. Topics covered will include mechatronic design, sensors, control and cognitive reasoning. It is also planned to include an exhibition focussing on the iCub humanoid robot which will cover the latest developments being done both at IIT and at UK Universities.

The free Evening Lecture will be given by Prof Darwin Caldwell who will explore the history of humanoid development from the early 1970s to the most advanced current systems and future possibilities. This will focus on the mechatronic development of the iCub (a child sized (4 years old) humanoid) before considering the design of a (as yet unnamed) humanoid that introduces a number of new technical innovations. The lecture will outline future advances in the mechatronics (and cognitive aspects of the humanoids) that yet need to be achieved. There will be a brief consideration of the social, ethical and economic viability of humanoids.

To register for the 1-day Symposium on Humanoid Robotics (£60), or find out more details, see: www.theiet.org/events/2010/humanoid-robot.cfm

To register for the Evening Lecture by Prof Darwin Caldwell (free), or find out more details, see: www.theiet.org/local/uk/london/icub.cfm
