Have You Robodoodled Today?

robodoodle.open.ac.uk

The Knowledge Media Institute and the Faculty of Technology at the Open University have collaborated to produce a unique public drawing event.

RoboDoodle encouraged children of all ages to log on to a special university website to make a sketch on-line of their own design for a ‘really useful robot’. RoboDoodle was part of The Big Draw, the festival of drawing which took place throughout the UK in October, which is organised by The Campaign for Drawing.

RoboCup 2010
Posted by ashley on Wednesday, June 30 @ 16:48:19 BST (52 reads)
Topic Information about RobocupJunior UK
290 RoboCupJunior teams from 27 countries participated in RoboCup 2010 in Singapore last week (a total of about 1050 children and 400 accompanying adults - the biggest RCJ event ever!).

Seven teams represented the UK - four in Soccer, two in Rescue and one in Dance. Unfortunately, none of them brought home any trophies this year.

Four young women from Prenton High School for Girls in Birkenhead were interviewed for The Gadget Show. Look out for them on one of the episodes in August.

Several animations and video clips from RoboCup 2010 have been posted on YouTube. Start with the Opening Ceremony Video and then view some the linked clips.

Ashley Green was RCJ Co-Chair and Kate Sim was Rescue OC Chair for RoboCup 2010. Ashley will be RCJ General Chair and Nicky Hughes will be Dance OC Chair for RoboCup 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey.

FLL Body Forward Training Day - 2nd September 2010
Posted by ashley on Monday, May 31 @ 12:01:28 BST (133 reads)
Topic Robot Challenges and Competitions
With the Body Forward season fast approaching, the partner training day will be held on Thursday 2nd September 2010 in the Wolfson School at Loughborough University. This will include an FLL programme update, a brief review of the Smart Move season, and a training session on the 2010 Body Forward challenge. I would also like to draw on your experience of FIRST LEGO League to determine how the programme could develop and how First Hand Technology can further support the tournament network across the UK and Ireland.

The Educational Benefit of FLL

With more children participating in FLL around the word, an independent study of the educational impact has provided evidence that the work you do is making a real difference to the skills of the children that participate. Through participation in FLL:

* Over 90% of team members had a better understanding of the role science and technology plays in solving everyday problems.
* Approximately 80% of team members reported increased interest in science and technology careers.
* Over 90% of team members reported gains in life and workplace related skills, including the ability to work with others on a team, find information, manage time, problem solve and make effective presentations.

The executive summary can be accessed through the FIRST website www.usfirst.org.

British Science Association CREST Awards

I'm delighted to inform you that FIRST LEGO League has been accredited with the British Science Association CREST Award scheme. CREST is Britain's largest national award scheme for project work in the STEM subjects and was established over 23 years ago. For students, CREST Awards are a tangible recognition of success, and team members will have the opportunity to apply for a Silver CREST Award through participation in FLL. A detailed session will be included on the agenda at the training day in September.

Thank you for your continued dedication to the FIRST LEGO League programme. Questions and feedback are always welcome, so please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything you would like to discuss.

Topic Robotics Curricula (from schools to HE)
I am pleased (and excited) to announce that after two years of research, writing, trialing and editing, “Educate NXT” is rolling off the presses at PITSCO (LEGO Education North America) for Worldwide distribution.

"Educate NXT" is a 275-page printed robotics resource for teachers and students. Teachers will find out how to successfully and confidently manage a robotics program within their school. It includes graded student worksheets, extensive teacher sections, animated PowerPoints and additional challenges. Educate NXT is designed to give educators control within the robotics classroom, yet fosters learning freedom and the buzz of student engagement.

I invite all current (and future) Robotics teachers to check out the "Educate NXT" website www.educatenxt.com which gives a very comprehensive overview of this exciting new resource.

Topic Robot Challenges and Competitions
A Google Lunar X PRIZE LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Challenge!

MoonBots is an exciting new contest that challenges teams of students (ages 9 and up) and adults from around the globe to learn about robotics, the Moon, and space exploration by designing and constructing a LEGO® MINDSTORMS robot that performs simulated lunar missions.

The MoonBots challenge is divided into two phases:

Phase 1 (April 15-May 28)
During Phase I, teams study the Moon's surface and an illustration of the challenge field and use the results of this study to digitally design a LEGO MINDSTORMS robot that can solve the MoonBots challenge. A team of judges select 20 teams to move on to Phase II.

Phase II (June 21-August 14)
During Phase II, teams are given a LEGO MINDSTORMS set and a MoonBots challenge field and must build their robot and solve the lunar challenge. A live, online video demonstration caps the team experience!

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams of Phase II with the grand prize being a trip for the team to the LEGO Company headquarters in Billund, Denmark! All Phase II team members will receive a two-year subscription to Wired magazine.

To learn more or register a team, visit www.MoonBots.org! Registration is open April 15-May 15. There is no cost to participate.
