RoboCupJunior UK 2004 Announced
Posted on Tuesday, February 03 @ 19:36:43 GMT
Topic: Information about RobocupJunior UK
RoboCupJunior is a project-oriented educational initiative designed to introduce RoboCup to primary and secondary school children. The focus in the junior league is on education. RoboCupJunior offers several challenges, each emphasizing both cooperative and competitive aspects. It provides a unique opportunity for participants with a variety of interests and strengths to work together as a team to achieve a common goal. Several challenges have been developed: dance, rescue and soccer.

The RoboCupJunior challenges have been designed to cater for a range of experience, ability, age groups. Whether you are new to robotics, or an old hand, there's something for everyone in RoboCupJunior.

Junior Dance (ages 7-18) One or more robots perform to music, in a display that emphasizes creativity of costume and movement. The contestants may (optionally) dance along with their robots, and may even compose and/or perform the music. This allows considerable scope for artistic creativity and is particularly appealing to girls.

Junior Rescue (ages 9-18) Robots race to rescue victims from artificial disaster scenarios. Autonomous robots follow a winding black (electrical tape) line through one or more small rooms, up a ramp and through more small rooms. Each time they encounter a 'body' (made of green or aluminized tape) lying across the line, they stop, beep and flash a lamp for four seconds.

Junior Soccer (ages (11-18) This is 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 robot soccer, involving autonomous robots, an infrared emitting ball and a greyscale pitch.

The design, construction and programming of the robots must be the contestants’ own work. Any construction system/materials may be used. The optimum team size, in all challenges, is four contestants (not including the robots!). Primary and secondary school teams are judged separately in Dance and Rescue. Junior Soccer is technically more demanding and therefore suitable only for secondary school teams.

RCJ tournaments will be held in several regions across the UK during March. The RCJ UK finals will be held at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire on Saturday 3rd April. The RCJ world finals will be held in Lisbon, Portugal on 27th June – 3rd July.
