For the second year running, the RoboCupJunior UK Finals were held at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire, the Allies' top secret codebreaking "Station X" during WWII. The wartime home of AI pioneer Alan Turing and the world's first electronic computer, Collosus, was a fitting venue for the robotics competition. During scheduled breaks, participants and spectators were treated to illustrated presentations by AI researcher and author Steve Grand, and "Robot Wars" celebrity Martin Smith.
RoboCupJunior UK is organised by The Open University, and this was the first year that the competition included entrants from beyond its neighbourhood in Milton Keynes. Teams gathered from as far afield as Birmingham, Essex, Shropshire and Suffolk to compete against one another for the opportunity to participate in RoboCup 2004 in Lisbon.
As expected, the majority of the prizes went to RCJ veterans from Milton Keynes, but several first-time entrants will also be representing the UK in Lisbon. Former world champions Max and Grace Petre Eastty shared first place in Primary Dance with a novice team from Ridgmont Lower School, Bedford who thrilled spectators with a pirate ship which pitched and tossed on imaginary swells to the theme from "Pirates of the Caribbean". A novice team from Dagenham City Learning Centre, Essex won first place in Primary Rescue, and newcomers Queensbury Upper School, Dunstable shared first place in Secondary Rescue with Denbigh School, Milton Keynes. Teams from Walton High School, Milton Keynes won both first and second places in Secondary Dance. Shenley Brook End School, Milton Keynes and Bishop Challoner School, Birmingham will be representing the UK in Soccer 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 respectively.
In future, RoboCupJunior UK will be collaborating with the FIRST LEGO League to attract competitors from across the UK. Over a dozen RCJ UK regional tournaments are being planned for 2005.
