Six of the eleven teams of youngsters who represented the UK in the junior league at RoboCup 2006 in Bremen, Germany last week made it through to the finals in their respective competitions. The UK teams were awarded a total of five top prizes.
“The Flight of the Phantom Phoenixes”, a team of seven girls from Suffolk, are now Primary RoboDance World Champions. The girls from Amberfield School near Ipswich also received the Special Prize for Costume. Their team mentor Dr Nicky Hughes and her husband Pat achieved a double whammy – their family team “The Lighthouse Men” also made it through to the Primary RoboDance finals and were awarded the Special Prize for Presentation. Yet another UK Primary RoboDance team, “Buzz” from St. Paul’s CE Primary School, Leamington Spa received the Special Prize for Choreography.
In Primary RoboSoccer, “CGGS Tech” from Calday Grange Grammar School, Wirral, “Scorpion” from Bishop Challoner RC School, Birmingham and “Celiabots” from St. Cecilia’s RC High School, Preston made it through to the finals. The multinational “superteam” of which CGGS Tech were a member came 3rd in the Primary RoboSoccer 2-on-2 finals.
“Celtic Mindstormers”, a family team of three brothers from Bridgend, South Wales came 8th out of the 38 teams competing in Secondary RoboRescue and made it through to the finals.
In all competition categories, our teams were up against stiff opposition from around the world, including state-sponsored Chinese and Japanese teams equipped with more advanced electronics.
All the British teams had to fund their own travel, accommodation and registration expenses for RoboCup 2006.
While at RoboCup 2006, RCJ UK Chair Dr Ashley Green was appointed to the international RoboCup Executive Committee. CGGS Tech's team mentor, Stephen Norbury, will succeed Ashley as RCJ UK Chair next academic year. Dr Nicky Hughes was elected to the RoboDance technical committee. Stephen and Nicky have been coaching champion RCJ and FLL teams for several years, so will be great assets to the RoboCupJunior organisation.
Prof Jeff Johnson and Dr Ashley Green will maintain their long-standing involvement in the RoboDance and RoboRescue technical committees respectively.
