Robot Days at Calday Grammar
Posted by ashley on Wednesday, February 17 @ 09:15:13 GMT (438 reads)
Topic STEM Outreach
Anonymous writes "Monday and Tuesday are robot days at Calday Grange Grammar School, the Wirral, next week.
There will be 180 Yr8 youngsters. There will be about 60 youngsters per three-hour session. The youngsters will do the Search, from RoboCupJunior. I'll use LEGO's RCX system. I'll do this in Calday's Hall. I expect it will be noisey but great fun.
Plus 35 Yr6 youngsters, from a local primary school, for an afternoon session of line following robots and an introduction to LEGO's NXT and WeDo.

Topic STEM Outreach
steve writes "Wednesday, next week, is RoboStuff Taster for NESTA's "idiscover project" at Manchester Creative and Media Academy.
The youngsters will see how commercial interactive toys function, including the HexBug and Go Go Hampster.
They will make a vibrobot, to demonstrate the idea of rapid prototyping/proof of concept.
They will then examine animation mechanisms, sound and light modules.
Hopefully, they will come up with some ideas for their interactive toy, that they will build at the next, all-day, session.

ROBOSTUFF TASTER
Posted by ashley on Friday, January 22 @ 10:16:42 GMT (656 reads)
Topic STEM Outreach
Steve writes "More on the ROBOSTUFF TASTER for NESTA’s idiscover project on 18th January at Harris Academy, South Norwood, London.
This was a 2 hour session with 15 youngsters.
The session included a look at some interactive soft toys, showing their inner workings and how commercial toys achieved interactivity, including the Go Go Hampster and HexBug. The youngsters quickly appreciated that the "cover" for the toy was an extremely important selling point.
Then followed the making of a vibrobot from old electric toothbrushes. Rapid prototype and a proof of concept models being emphasised.
The youngsters then had a look at some commercial animation mechanisms and voice modules.
Finally they had to decide on a type of toy, the mechanisms/modules to use and any material to make their proof of concept toy "attractive", for the all day next session.
I am certainly looking forward to the event.
