IMPORTANT DATES

- Paper/Poster Submission: Tuesday 1st June 2010

- Notification of Acceptance: Monday 19th July 2010

- Camera Ready Paper: Monday 30th August 2010

CONTRIBUTIONS

Contributions are invited in the form of papers of up to fourteen A4 pages presenting original work in AI. Contributions may be submitted to either of two streams for oral presentation, or a parallel poster session (six pages maximum).

Technical Stream

Areas of interest include (but are not restricted to): knowledge engineering; semantic web; constraint satisfaction; intelligent agents; machine learning; model based reasoning; verification and validation of AI systems; natural language understanding; speech-enabled systems; case based reasoning; neural networks; genetic algorithms; data mining and knowledge discovery in databases; knowledge representation, inference and reasoning; robotics and pervasive computing; qualitative and temporal reasoning; knowledge management; AI languages and environments; robotics and pervasive computing.

Application Stream

Case studies are welcomed describing the application of AI to real-world problems. Papers in recent years have covered all application domains, including commerce, manufacturing and government, and every major AI technique. In addition to case studies and specific applications of AI, we would welcome papers that discuss issues such as managing the transfer from research to production of AI-based products.

Papers are selected to highlight critical areas of success (and failure) and to present the benefits and lessons of value to other developers. Submitted papers should make these points clear. Guidance notes for Application Stream authors are available from the website.

Poster Session

The Poster Session is intended for the presentation of work which meets the high standards of the conference, but which is more topical and preliminary than the work presented in the main two streams. It is an excellent forum for disseminating new developments and latest work in progress, especially suited to MSc and PhD students. Poster papers will be included as short papers (maximum 6 pages) in the proceedings volumes. Papers submitted to the Technical and Application streams will automatically be considered as posters if they fall short of the standard for oral presentation in full form.

Publication of Papers

Papers accepted for presentation at the conference will be published in book form by Springer.

- The books will be prepared from camera-ready copy supplied by the authors of accepted papers.

- Formatting specifications for the proceedings have been provided by the publisher and are available from the conference website.

- Authors will retain copyright in all papers published in the two volumes of proceedings.

- The best six refereed papers in each stream will be reprinted as a special issue of the international journal Knowledge Based Systems.

Submission of Papers

Papers must be prepared in either Microsoft Word or Latex. Initial versions of papers should be submitted in PDF format only and uploaded to the conference website by TUESDAY JUNE 1st 2010 at the latest. There are revised Word macro and Latex style files compared with previous years.

- At least one author of each accepted paper must register for and attend the conference to present it in person, for the paper to be published.

- Presenting authors will be asked to register for the conference at the discounted speakers' rate when they return the final camera-ready printed versions of their papers.

Tutorials & workshops

The Conference Committee invites proposals for tutorials and workshops to be presented on the first day of the conference. These should be directed in the first instance to the Tutorial/Workshop Organiser.

Prizes

There are sponsored prizes (a trophy plus 500 pounds) for the best paper submitted in each stream and a trophy plus a cash prize for the best poster, awarded on the basis of delegate voting. There is also a trophy plus a cash prize for the best refereed paper written by a student.

Machine Intelligence Competition

A permanent trophy awarded for one year plus a cash prize will be awarded to the winner of the annual machine intelligence competition. This prize will be awarded to the working system that is considered to be the most significant step forward towards Machine Intelligence on display at the competition.

All further information including details of the conference committee, program committees, paper format and uploading instructions is given on the conference website.

Posted by ashley on Monday, January 18 @ 09:19:58 GMT (696 reads)
Topic Conferences & Workshops
London, 8th March 2010

A 1-day Symposium on Humanoid Robotics and an evening lecture by Prof Darwin Caldwell (Director, Italian Institute of Technology - IIT, Genoa) is being organised by the IET in London on 8th March 2010.

The 1-day Symposium will include speakers from a range of UK Universities (Aberystwyth, Bristol, Edinburgh, Hertfordshire, Imperial, Manchester, Plymouth & Sheffield) as well as 4 talks from leading researchers at IIT and more details can be found on the IET website list below. Topics covered will include mechatronic design, sensors, control and cognitive reasoning. It is also planned to include an exhibition focussing on the iCub humanoid robot which will cover the latest developments being done both at IIT and at UK Universities.

The free Evening Lecture will be given by Prof Darwin Caldwell who will explore the history of humanoid development from the early 1970s to the most advanced current systems and future possibilities. This will focus on the mechatronic development of the iCub (a child sized (4 years old) humanoid) before considering the design of a (as yet unnamed) humanoid that introduces a number of new technical innovations. The lecture will outline future advances in the mechatronics (and cognitive aspects of the humanoids) that yet need to be achieved. There will be a brief consideration of the social, ethical and economic viability of humanoids.

To register for the 1-day Symposium on Humanoid Robotics (£60), or find out more details, see: www.theiet.org/events/2010/humanoid-robot.cfm

Speaker: Brian Reffin Smith

Title: Post Computer Art ‹ Ontological Undecidability and the Cat with Paint on its Paws.

It is argued that an active re-visiting of computer based artworks from the last 60 or so years is essential to any progress of today's work towards an activity that pushes at the frontiers of contemporary art.

We need to open up the history, works, techniques and discourses of computer based art to enable a revolution to occur, that of rendering the art problematic and Œdifficult; then new solutions will emerge. It is suggested that whilst conceptual art was busy doing just this, computer based art was rushing madly in the opposite direction, trying in a reformist manner to make things easier, simpler.

Derrida, ŒPataphysics, Schrödinger's cat and the living dead may well be brought into play.

Brian Reffin Smith is a writer, artist, performer and teacher. He was a pioneer of computer-based conceptual art, with the aim of trying to resist technological determinism and Œstate of the art¹ technology, which might merely produce Œstate of the technology¹ art. He is a French civil servant, having been invited to work for their Ministry of Culture.

Smith, who won the first-ever Prix Ars Electronica, the Golden Nike, in Linz in 1987, is a Regent of the College of 'Pataphysics, Paris, holding the Chair of Catachemistry and Speculative Metallurgy. He is Professeur, École Nationale Supérieure d'Art, Bourges, France.

Areas of work, research, teaching and performance include theidea of the philosophical Zombie in art and elsewhere, and the détournement or Œhijacking¹ of systems, mechanisms, programs etc. to make art.

He became a Zombie, after a short illness, in 1999.

The British Computer Society Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence (SGAI) has announced the first in a new series of one-day ‘SGAI Real Artificial Intelligence days’, with a strong practical focus aimed at business and industry.

This is a low-cost event: the standard delegate rate is £75 (+VAT), with a special student rate of £50 (+VAT). A discounted group rate of £50 (+VAT) per delegate is also available for groups of three or more delegates.

The event will feature talks from leading exponents and case studies outlining practical applications of AI from a wide range of application domains. There will be speakers from manufacturing, semantic search, medical imaging, autonomous vehicles, policing, games and simulation.

The first ‘Real AI Day’ will take place on Thursday 17th December 2009, at Peterhouse College, Cambridge. Plenty of time has been allowed in the programme for discussion and the event will close with a networking drinks reception.

This is an opportunity for those in business and industry to find out what is happening in AI and for academics and students working in AI to find out what is happening in the ‘real world’ of AI applications.

Full details can be found at www.bcs-sgai.org/realai2009. The event will be held in conjunction with BCS SGAI's annual conference, AI-2009.
